Wellingtonians to witness the ‘Day of the Dead’2012
Mexico’s famous celebration of the dead – el Dia de los Muertos - will hit the streets of Wellington on Friday 2nd November.
The Day of the Dead is a time when Mexican’s honour the spirits of their deceased ancestors, paying homage with colourful altars in their homes and all-night vigils in cemeteries. In Wellington, celebrations will take the form of an altar ceremony in the Paramount Theatre followed by a street parade. All Wellingtonian’s are invited to participate.
“We are also honoured to have African and other Latino communities taking part in this event with us,” explains organiser Jorge Herrera. “It’s a chance for us to share our cultures and traditions.”
In the build up to the event, a talk will be held in the Trade Aid store at 86-96 Victoria Street Wellington on Friday 26 October at 6pm. This will feature a panel discussion on traditions around the dead and is open to the public.
On November 2nd, anyone who wishes to join the parade can have their face painted skeleton-style at the Paramount between 3:00 and 6:00pm. An altar will be built in the lobby of the cinema, decked out with flowers and traditional offerings to the dead. The procession will depart from the Paramount at 7:15, proceed to Victoria Street, and finally end at Left Bank. Latino musicians will ensure the parade features plenty of dancing and singing. More than 100 people are expected to attend.
“The idea of celebrating the dead may seem strange to New Zealanders, but this is really a joyous occasion that recognises the cycle of life,” says Jorge. “We are extending the invitation to all Wellingtonians to join us.”
