Local Man Recognised for His Service to Coastguard
Local man, Greg Wilson, received the 2012 Coastguard Northern Region ‘Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year’ award for the Hauraki operational area last night at Coastguard Maraetai’s unit training evening.
Mr Wilson has dedicated a considerable amount of hours as a Skipper and countless more fulfilling the other Coastguard duties he has taken on.
In recognition of his efforts, Mr Wilson was awarded with a trophy and certificate by Coastguard Northern Region’s Chief Executive, David Tommas.
Mr Tommas says, “Coastguard Northern Region is extremely grateful to all those who donate their time and Greg is an outstanding example of someone who has a real and dedicated passion to the organisation and our mission of saving lives at sea.
“The entire community benefits from the work of our volunteers and we’re thrilled to be able to extend our recognition to individuals like Greg.”
The award forms part of Coastguard’s ‘People First Strategy’, an ongoing commitment by the organisation to recognise the many New Zealanders who donate their time and energy to keeping people safe on the water.
Mr Wilson was thrilled to be the recipient of the 2012 award and looks forward to continuing his time with Coastguard.
“It was a humbling experience to receive the award when surrounded by so many dedicated volunteers who are just as much deserving as me”, says Mr Wilson.
Coastguard Northern Region is the charity saving lives at sea. It has over 1,000 volunteers and in the last year, brought 4,615 people home to safety.
