CommuniTREEs Brighten Christchurch Suburbs

Twelve unique
trees have appeared around the city on Anglican church
sites. Designed by Warren and Mahoney architects, the trees
are computer cut out of plywood.
Project Creator Rev Craig Dixon said, “Adorned with solar powered lights they are a delight to behold day or night. But Sadly, one of the twelve lasted only a day before it was completely destroyed by vandals.”
The St Aidan's communiTREE in Bryndwr was the first to go up. “Unfortunately someone lacking the Christmas spirit destroyed it in the dark of night.” Rev’d Dixon said. He is hoping to replace this tree with something fitting and unique.
Craig is also the creator of the unique 'Cardboard Christmas Tree on the site of the planned Transitional Cathedral.
The communiTREES sit on 2.2 tonne concrete blocks identical to those used around the city to prop up damaged structures.
Craig said "We've transformed these blocks into something hopeful. They have been become into objects of beauty. We hope the trees on top of the blocks bring some festive cheer to people as they drive around the city.”
The twelve trees are dotted in suburbs across the city, mostly on main roads.
The trees will remain until January 6th. The church's traditional date for removing Christmas trees. The concrete blocks remain however and become plinths for other creative projects through the year.
