St Andrew’s boarders back on campus

St Andrew’s boarders back on campus

After two years living in city motels, St Andrew’s College boarders are finally back on the campus in a purpose-built boarding complex.

The $15.2 million project will be officially opened by Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key on Thursday, March 28 at 10:30am.

Two of the College’s three boarding houses had to be demolished as a result of the February 2011 earthquake and the Board of Governors agreed to fast track plans for a new boarding establishment to house 120 boarders. The modern complex was designed by Wilkie and Bruce Architects and is built to 100% of the new building code and incorporates the latest engineering technology.

In order to provide greater strength and stability to the building, significant ground remediation work was undertaken. General Manager David Evans says this work included incorporating 660 stone columns to a depth of six metres. These were then overlaid with a deep gravel raft and concrete slab foundations.

“Safety for our students and staff was paramount when considering this project.” says Mr Evans.

Rector Christine Leighton applauded the efforts of the construction teams who completed the building in record time. “The total team effort between our architects and our contractors has been amazing and they have met some very challenging deadlines that have allowed us to be open within 13 months of starting construction.”

Care has been taken to ensure the materials used in the construction of the boarding houses are sympathetic to the existing environment. The houses have been designed to allow boarders to enjoy a combination of private and communal living spaces with areas for quiet study and reflection and recreational areas to relax and socialize. The interior fit out is contemporary with practical bedroom design that is not only spacious but also has attractive furnishings, including built in desks, pin boards and storage.

“It is outstanding to have our boarders back onsite and to share once again a vibrant and supportive community, which generates life-long friendships,” says Director of Boarding Dianne MacDonald. “Being onsite fosters the strong boarding spirit and culture that makes StAC boarding distinctive.”
