At 1117 hours today Coastguard Northern Region’s Operations Centre witnessed through their window a helicopter crash in the Hauraki Gulf just off North Head.
Approximately 30 seconds later they received a call from Navy vessel, War Ship Taupo, who happened to be right on scene at the time the helicopter crashed. Coastguard was advised that two men were in the helicopter and had been rescued by the Navy ship almost immediately.
Coastguard Howick Rescue 1 and North Shore Rescue were tasked to offer assistance and are currently on scene with other agencies.
The men were transferred on to Police Launch Deodar and brought back to the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre where they were met by St John’s Ambulance.
