Mt Crawford is not for sale

PRESS RELEASE

The Save Mt Crawford Campaign

“Mt Crawford is not for sale”

Behind the scenes, a Government department (LINZ) is currently making plans to sell the Mt Crawford/Wellington Prison property on the open market.

This means that if these plans go ahead, this substantial area of State owned land on the Miramar peninsula, will probably be purchased by a very wealthy developer.

A few months ago, the “Save Mt Crawford” campaign was launched by a few concerned locals, for the purposes of opposing the disposal of the prison in this fashion.

The main aim of this campaign is to make our opposition to the sale (privatisation) of the Prison more widely known, in the hope that the powers that be may come to their senses, & ring fence this property for inclusion in any future Miramar Peninsular Reserve.

We intend to use a combination of methods to get our message across such as;

Collaborating with others to raise public awareness of this issue, & organize local rallies to protest against the sale of the Mt Crawford & Shelly Bay properties.

The placing of numerous “Mt Crawford is not for salesigns & banners in the vicinity of the prison.

The planting of fruit trees on the former prison garden land, in order to establish a Mt Crawford community orchard & garden.

Taking action too randomly plant native trees & shrubs on & around the prison property.

Promoting the idea that; reclamation of surplus land such as this for the commons, will contribute to beautifying our local environment, & enhancing the wellbeing of all who live, work, play & celebrate in the area.

If measures such as these do not succeed in stopping these properties falling into the hands of developers, then we may have to consider the possibility of using civil disobedience, to disrupt the sale process itself.
