Toner Returns to Northern Roots

Toner Returns to Northern Roots

For Immediate Release
16th August, 2013.

Independent candidate Jacob Toner has announced he will stand in the Northern Ward for the upcoming Wellington City Council elections.

"From the beginning my campaign has been about pushing for the Council to have a fresh focus on getting the basics right. I strongly believe the Council needs rejuvenation and some fresh blood. Wellington deserves a Council with enthusiasm and ideas.”

“I initially decided to contest the Southern Ward to challenge Bryan Pepperell, who after 17 years on the Council has failed to be an effective or productive representative. I was particularly disappointed at how progress on cycle ways has largely stalled while he has held the cycling portfolio. With Ginette McDonald announcing her candidacy in the Southern Ward, I am confident that the ward will get the rejuvenation it desperately needs.”

“However, there are other areas where rejuvenation is also needed. The Northern Ward has a current Councillor approaching three decades around the Council table. It’s hard to see what fresh vision they are bringing to the table today. I was stunned when the Council cancelled a regular meeting during the drought earlier this year because the agenda wasn’t full enough. There is plenty of work to be done to cement our reputation as the ‘Coolest Little Capital in the World’.”

“I am committed to helping Wellington get the basics right, and to that end I have decided to contest the Northern Ward. I lived in Johnsonville for many years, and my parents are moteliers in the suburb."

"My commitment to Wellington is the same, I want to be a strong, positive, and collaborative voice at the Council table to push for a vibrant, prosperous Wellington. I want to be an effective Councillor for the Northern Ward.
