Statement from New Zealand Fire Service Region Commander, Assistant National Commander Ian Pickard
The New Zealand Fire Service has confirmed that one of its Wellington firefighters was injured while attending a fire in Petone this afternoon. He has been admitted to Hutt Hospital and is being assessed. The Fire Service is providing support and assistance to the man and his family and no updates will be released on his condition until the morning.
In the meantime, as is standard in these situations, a review of the firefighting operation will be carried out to look at what happened. A separate investigation will also be carried out into the cause of the fire. No one else was injured in the in fire.
