Fish & Game aim to lure the ladies

Fish & Game aim to lure the ladies

In an attempt to introduce more members of the opposite sex to the joys of sport fishing Otago Fish & Game is embarking on a new initiative – Female-only Fishing Classes.

According to Otago Fish & Game ranger Steve Dixon, they have listened to the community and see this as “an opportunity to meet the public’s needs regarding fishing, and show them just how easy it is.”

“We are taking more and more phone calls from women enquiring about where to take their children, where to get a rod, and what else will I need?. This Dunedin based course should answer all those questions and more.”

Mr Dixon has also recently returned from a fact finding trip to the USA, where he noted the growing popularity of female fishing and all-female fishing groups.

Males have not been left out entirely with Fish & Game also offering a mixed class in the lead up to the new season which begins on October 1st.

The four hour beginner spin fishing sessions will be half classroom and half practical with the latter session held at Dunedin’s Southern Reservoir. The intended outcome is to arm aspiring fishermen and women with the necessary skills like setting up a rod & reel, casting, common knots, fish species and where to go fishing. Fish stocks from Macraes Hatchery will be released into the reservoir to give the budding novices a great chance at early angling success.

Depending on demand, Fish & Game intends to run more novice angler classes throughout the season to encourage more adults into the outdoors, and to participate in a fun activity over the summer.

More info:

The dates for the fishing classes are:-

Novice Adult Fishing Class (September 4th)
Women-Only Beginner Fishing Class (September 5th)
Practical Lesson (both classes) – at the Southern Reservoir (September 6th)
