Progress for Tahunanui residents on traffic solutions.

Mayor Miccio met, in Nelson, last week with New Zealand Transport Agency officials to ensure that when their report on the Tahunanui intersection comes back for community consultation, a third option will be added for a single lane through the lights, incorporating the removal of the current clearway and the reinstatement of parking south of the traffic lights.

Mayor Miccio says “I’m pleased to confirm that when this consultation comes back to the community it will now have a third option which was previously omitted by the NZTA”. He continues, “We have managed to engage constructively with NZTA on behalf of the Tahunanui community, the progress we have made will certainly give the incoming Council a head start in making sure the best solutions and outcomes for residents and businesses are achievable.”

Initially the NZTA published a report for the council with two options for improving the intersection, both included extending the clearway, however the Tahunanui Business Association was unanimous in wanting clearways along Tahunanui Drive removed, saying they were ineffective and harmed businesses in the area.

Mayor Miccio will meet members of the Tahunanui business association and community to convey this message at a second public forum on Tuesday 24th September.
