Ensuring the future of our Trails

Media Release

Ensuring the future of our Trails

Cycling and walking are a large part of the visitor experience, and the recreation and health experience of Central Otago residents.

Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Trails have been eight years in the making. They have been created by the generous support of landowners and volunteers. Volunteers will be managing these trails into the future, hence the need for riders and walkers to contribute to the ongoing maintenance. It is expected that all users will contribute.

Maintaining the Trails is a costly task to undertake, so to help raise funds, the Roxburgh Gorge Charitable Trust and the Clutha Gold Charitable Trust have implemented a user fee system through the sale of maintenance contribution tags.

All users are expected to purchase a maintenance contribution tag. One tag will give users access to both the Roxburgh Gorge and the Clutha Gold Trails for one year. The revenues generated by these tags will support the ongoing maintenance of the trails and help to ensure the future of our wonderful community assets.

The fee is $25 per person per annum and $50 per family per annum.

The annual maintenance contribution tag can be either attached to your bike or your bag for walking. It is an annual contribution from 1 October to 30 September. Tags, which are individually numbered and will be a different colour each year, will give the user access to both trails.

Roxburgh Gorge Charitable Trust Chair Stephen Jeffery said he believed the introduction of the maintenance tag was new in New Zealand and is necessary to support the future of trails.
