Positive Rumblings from the East
After 20 years of social and economic decline New Brighton is making its presence felt in the rebuild of Christchurch. Although a lot of positive attention and encouraging signs are emerging recently it is also a time to reflect on the actual situations that this coastal asset is facing.
On Wednesday the 13th of November, 7pm at the Roy Stokes hall (this Wednesday) Andrea Cummings (Chair Burwood Pegasus Community Board) is hosting a public forum to discuss current issues in New Brighton, “It’s not a New Brighton bashing exercise” says Andrea, “but rather a chance for active community engagement hearing peoples voices, issues and constraints. They must be heard in order to enable the change that is so desired by many”.
New Brighton has been one of the darlings of media focus as of late but little action has been seen on the immediate situation and surroundings, many exciting projects are being worked on for the sustainable development and rejuvenation of New Brighton but some issues need to be addressed first and foremost on this road to recovery and rejuvenation.
“It’s the steps that we need to focus on” says New Brighton Business and Landowners Association Manager Paul Zaanen, “it is a 2000 step process to lead to the end result we are all working on, we must ensure that progress is made immediately in order to reach our goals, I am excited by the signs that I am seeing from all agencies and can only hope these hit the ground soon”.
The Forum on Wednesday is called "It's as easy as ABC - Action for our Brighton Community’ and seeks to hear what the local businesses, community groups and public has to say on the state of the recovery and the myriad of issues that need to be taken into account, from council and private maintenance of assets through to Policing and everything in between.
Chris Lynch of Newstalk ZB will be MC’ing the night and there will be representatives of all major agencies including the Police, CERA and the Christchurch City Council.
“This is an opportunity to address the issues and also to look forward from here” says Andrea, “we intend that everyone leaves on Wednesday with their heads held high with optimism for the future, bring your issues but also your solutions to the table and let’s activate change. We are not a problem to be solved but a potential to be realised"
