The
Antigua footbridge near the Antigua Boatsheds and
Christchurch Hospital is coming back together again after
removal of the curved steel structure last year for repair
off-site.
SCIRT’s Downer team will be lifting the
refurbished steel truss (the arched underside) back to the
river on Wednesday night after 4.30 pm. The original lift
took several hours as the bowed structure had embedded
itself against the bridge’s abutments on the
riverbank.
The replacing of the structure on the new
abutments should be more straightforward, say the Downer
site engineers.
There is still quite a lot of work to do
until the bridge can be reopened in about six weeks time. A
new concrete deck, surfacing and handrails have to go in
place and the ends of the footbridge smoothed onto the
adjoining footpaths and cycleways.
