New Akaroa Harbour Brochure Launched for
Seaweek

Why is Akaroa Harbour Special? The answer to this discussion-provoking question has been summarised in a new brochure launched this week by the Akaroa District Promotions.
“The impetus for this initiative arose when it was recognised that there was a gap in the information readily available for residents and visitors to appreciate all that Akaroa Harbour has to offer” says Hollie Hollander, Executive Officer of the Akaroa District Promotions.
“Pohatu and Akaroa marine reserves and the Banks Peninsula marine mammal sanctuary are administered by the Department of Conservation. The taiāpure-local fishery is administered by the Ministry for Primary Industries. However lacking is the availability of a single over-all reference point describing all the boundaries of the various fishing and conservation zones” added Hollie.
Each of the zones and the species regularly seen there are described along with enlarged maps.
Add to this the geological, historical and cultural significance of Akaroa Harbour along with a commercial mix of marine farming and tourism initiatives and the result is a unique and attractive marine environment worthy of promotion in its own right.
The brochure is a ‘guide only’ for harbour users and fishers are advised to check the relevant rules before setting out.
For a copy of the brochure when in Akaroa visit the Akaroa Adventure Centre.
