Walter Massey Park is now open to locals after $1m field
upgrades funded by the Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board.
The fields were recently blessed by local kaumatua Bob Clark, in a ceremony marking the end of four months of work and the start of many more years of local sport activities out on the improved fields.
Walter Massey Park consists of three rugby league fields and two football fields, with a shared dedicated training area. The upgrades included the number one league field, the two football fields, and the training area being upgraded to sand carpet fields.
Local Board spokesperson Nick Bakulich says the huge and costly job was an important project for the board who are determined to encourage more active communities, more often.
“Upgrading the fields to sand carpet improves the drainage of water from the surfaces, reducing flooding and the likelihood of cancelled games,” says Mr Bakulich.
“As well as surface improvements, the training area will have additional lights added to increase the size of the training area that can be used at night.
“These upgrades improve the playing environment for the home teams so that they can make most of the fields no matter what the season.”
Walter Massey Park is the home of the Mangere East Rugby League Football and the Manukau City AFC football Club who have officially started this year’s rugby league and football season.
