Walker Worries About Job

“Albany Councillor Wayne Walker is terrified of losing his job next election following a voter backlash against the new transport levies which will see an average rates increase of 9.9%,” says Affordable Auckland Albany candidate Stephen Berry. “Now he is engaged in a massive flip-flop, beseeching Len Brown to find savings in the transport budget to save his job.”

Wayne Walker was one of thirteen councillors who voted in favour of a transport levy which would see average residential rates rise to 9.9%. Property owners in Hibiscus and Bays face an average of 6.3% while those in Upper Harbour will see their rates increase by 9.9%

“Come election time next year, Albany voters will not be fooled by Mr. Walker’s crocodile tears. His voting record and that of his colleague John Watson clearly mimic the bloc which has consistently voted with Len Brown since 2013.”

Stephen Berry will be offering a clear alternative when he contests the Albany ward in the 2016 election. “I’ll be standing on a platform which seeks to keep rates increases within the level of inflation, funding only those services which are essential to the functioning of the city and making housing more affordable in Auckland by removing the regulatory distortions causing hyper-inflation.”

Mr. Berry will begin door knocking in the suburb of Greenhithe on Thursday next week.
