Kapiti road closures update


Media Advisory - issued at 8.55am

• We're inspecting our critical assets and signs are being posted at flooding sites

• We're clearing slips, trees and other debris at Ōtaki Gorge

• There's also clean up crews at slip sites at Waterfall Road, Forest Lakes, Freemans Road and Rahui Road

• We'll be managing traffic around a dropout on Waterfall Road

• The road that are closed are:

o Ōtaki Gorge, Convent and Atkinson roads in Ōtaki.

o Water has largely receded on Arcus and School roads in Te Horo

o Te Horo Beach Road is also in flood but passable

• The bridge at Ringawhati Road in Ōtaki has been washed out and the water main severed, meaning a number of households may be without water.

The weather eased overnight. More rain is forecast but possibly not as heavy as we experienced yesterday. River levels are dropping, but we'll continue to keep a close eye on the outlook.

As daylight approaches our focus will be to assess the degree of surface flooding in the district - in particular Ōtaki and Te Horo where there is significant surface flooding and ponding.

• There is some surface flooding in School Road, Te Horo Beach Road and Arcus Road in Te Horo

• Convent and Bennett Roads in Ōtaki are closed

• Atkinson Road is badly affected by flood waters

• Tasman Road is affected by floodwater

• There is flooding in Riverbank Road and parts of Ōtaki township

• There are slips on Ōtaki Gorge Road at Blue Bluff, on Forest Lakes Road and on Waterfall Road

• There are additional crews being called out to check the roading network and extra staff have been called in to the call centre to coordinate service requests.

• The bridge at Ringawhati Road in Ōtaki has been washed out and the water main severed. A number of households may be without water. This will be confirmed at first light.

• Several properties in Otaihanga have been affected by flooding.

Public safety messages:

Take care on roads int eh district - there is surface flooding in many places in the district. Stay away from waterways - there is still a lot of water in river corridors.

Residents in flood prone areas are advised to phone 111 if they are worried about their personal safety. Call Council on 0800486486 if you need assistance.

- If flood waters entered your home last night, we're advising people to contact electricity network company Electra on 0800 567 876 before starting your clean up.

- Also touching base with your insurance company may be a good idea if you can

- Reminder to please stay away from waterways and flood waters - rivers and streams are still running high and may contain debris.

- As it becomes light please check on neighbours, particularly people living alone.

State Highway 1:

The NZ Transport Agency is advising that SH1 at Tatum Park, in the Horowhenua District, is closed due to damage to the Waikawa Stream Bridge. The alternative route is via SH2 and SH3. For more information contact the NZ Transport Agency.
