Mock car crash sends important message at FireNZ Safety Conference
The harsh reality and trauma of a car crash was on display to the public today as part of the FireNZ safety conference.
Wellington Free Ambulance and the NZ Fire Service gave an insight into the consequences of a car crash with emergency crews rushing to save a“seriously injured” crash victim.
Two cars were set up as if they had just collided, with one patient still inside.
Spectators saw the Fire Service use the ‘Jaws of Life’ to get the patient out, and Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics treated their lifelike facial injuries and broken arm, created by Sean Foote from Weta Workshop.
Wellington Free Ambulance head of communications and fundraising Di Livingston says it was a great event, with many onlookers amazed at the process of extracting patients from vehicles.
“It was really great to
be working together with Fire Service in public, to show
people how we work together to save lives,” she
says.
The demonstration highlighted the importance of safe driving and the dire consequences of road accidents, especially important as we head into the busy summer period.
The two day conference, and public displays which ran throughout, were organised by the Fire Protection Association.
