A variety fundraiser for domestic violence charities

The Show Some Love Show - A variety fundraiser for domestic violence charities

The Show Some Love Show is a variety fundraiser to raise money for Wellington Women’s Refuge and Te Whare Rokiroki Maori Women's Refuge. It will feature some of NZ’s best musicians, comedians, dancers, and poets; including The Eastern, Alice Brine, James Nokise and Fanciforia Foxglove. Wednesday, November 4th at The Fringe Bar. Tickets $25, available on Eventfinda.

“There’s been so much talk about domestic and intimate partner violence in the news and on social media lately. When you look at the stats for NZ, I think it’s really easy to feel a bit discouraged. We have some of the worst in the world, and it’s easy to feel like there’s nothing you can do to help,” says Hadassah Grace, creator and producer of the show, and author of the recently viral blog post Who the Hell is Tony Veitch. “I wanted to find a way for people to have fun, enjoy a bunch of great performances, and leave knowing they had done something good for New Zealand.

I was really shocked at how many people are willing to turn a blind eye to domestic violence. When I posted my blog, I got a lot of people saying it was none of my business, and saying things like, ‘We’ll never know what really happened that night,’ which makes it seem like the attack might have been justified or provoked somehow. I think not wanting to feel like we’re poking our noses into other people’s business is part of the reason domestic violence is such a huge problem in New Zealand. We have a culture of privacy, but it’s also a culture of silence, which keep victims isolated, and stops the attackers getting rehabilitation, too.”

None of the people involved are taking producer’s or performer’s fees, and a lot of sponsors have come on board to ensure the costs of running the event are low, so that as much money as possible can be donated.

“The response has been overwhelming!” says Ms Grace. “From photographers to catering companies, I can’t believe how many people have reached out to me saying they want to help. We’ve actually had to turn performers away, because if we included everyone the show would be about four hours long - I’ve had to make a spreadsheet to keep track of all the people who have offered to help backstage! I think most people know there’s a problem with domestic violence in New Zealand, they just don’t know how to help.”
