Gourmet Night Market extends its hours for New Year’s Day

Mount Maunganui is the quintessential kiwi summer destination and on New Year’s day holiday makers will have even more reason to love the seaside town.

Gourmet Night Market, located in Coronation Park, downtown Mount Maunganui, will have more than 50 stalls to choose from including dinner options, a specialist dessert aisle, drinks and an artisan farmers market.

Market organiser Kim Renshaw said “There are plenty of options to fix a decent new year’s hangover, but we’ve made sure we have plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options as well.”

Market-goers can expect to find woodfired pizza, crepes, gourmet sandwiches, Mexican, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese dumplings, german sausages, southern American style and Italian pasta as well as a smorgasbord of seafood options: mussel fritters, calamari, ceviche, mussels in creamy sauce and much, much more.

The specialist dessert aisle is a must-visit with 3 types of icecream, macaroons, acai bowls, waffles, crumpets, churros, traditional baking, brownies and raw cheesecakes.

“We’ve moved all our drinks together so you can find them easier. If you pick up a reusable cup from our info tent, you’ll score yourself 50 cents off your drinks,” said Miss Renshaw. The market was not licensed to serve alcohol due to the park being in a permanent liquor ban zone.

The market will open at 3pm to satiate late lunch grazers, live music would start with local acoustic duo The Native Poms from 4.30pm followed by rock group The Velvets.

Described as a blend of rock, blues and soul, The Velvets are a local Mount Maunganui band comprising of Ange Jalava on drums, Brian Franks & Bruce Rolands on guitar and bass and British soul singer Tara Watson on vocals.

The music would go through until 8.45PM with the market closing at 9PM.

After soaking up the atmosphere and eating as much food as desired, market-goers might wander through the artisan farmers market aisle and pick up supplies for the rest of the holidays.
