The Warehouse Zoofari raises $21K for low decile students in 2016

Over the next few months 2,000 students from 19 low-decile schools across the Wellington and Tasman/Marlborough regions will visit Wellington Zoo thanks to The Warehouse and its customers, who raised $21,102.91 towards providing conservation learning programmes for schools.

The Warehouse Wellington Zoofari is a partnership between Wellington Zoo and The Warehouse, which began in 2013 with the aim of making Zoo learning more accessible to as many children as possible. Now in its third year, the partnership has seen over 3,200 students attend The Warehouse Wellington Zoofari at Wellington Zoo.

“For a lot of children, programmes like these may be the only opportunity for them to visit a zoo,” says Visitor Learning Manager Lynn Allan. “Our conservation learning programmes play an important role in connecting and engaging children with the world around them, developing a love for nature.”

NZ Bus and Interislander also support the programme, providing discounted transport for participating schools to and from Wellington Zoo.

“Wellington Zoo is not for profit, so support from businesses like The Warehouse, NZ Bus and Interislander help ensure our learning programmes can be made available to everyone,” adds Allan.

In 2016, The Warehouse Wellington Zoofari extended to Titiro Whakamua, a teen parenting unit providing secondary schooling for teenagers who are pregnant or already parents.

The following schools will take part in the 2016 programme: Avalon Primary School, He Huarahi Tamariki, Rangikura School, Te Ara Whanui Kura Kaupapa Māori, Cannons Creek School, Naenae Primary School, Porirua School, Russell School, Tairangi School, Titahi Bay North School, Koraunui School, Taita College, Titiro Whakamua Teen Parent Unit and Early Childhood Education, St Joseph's School, Porirua East School, Pomare School, Rata Street School, Taita Central School.
