The National Rodeo Final is on in Dunedin at the Outram Arena March 5th 4pm and Saturday March 6th 10am. Christchurch Animal Rights Action has organized a public protest against the national rodeo final on the grounds of the rodeo being a cruel and outdated means of entertainment.
At least two animals have been killed this season in New Zealand due to horrific injuries; Krysta Neve from Christchurch Animal Rights Action has attended three rodeos this season and she said “ The animals used are terrified and injuries are common for both animals and humans. There is a rodeo code the members are meant to follow for animal welfare purposes however I have seen first hand this code being broken a number of times. Animals are dying and all the code does is give the rodeo association a policy to hide behind.”
There is currently a petition being circulated around the country by a coalition of the RNZSPCA, SAFE and Farmwatch to get the rodeo banned in New Zealand. The petition currently has tens and thousands of signatures and will be delivered to parliament later this month.
