New Project Seeks Binders for Transgender Youth

New Project Seeks Binders for Transgender Youth

The 13th of April, 2016 will see the launch of the Wellington Binder Exchange. This exchange will provide chest binders free of charge for young people aged 18 and under who do not have the ability to access binders themselves.

A binder is a chest compression vest designed to compress breasts and create a masculine looking chest. Binders can substantially help with feelings of discomfort (sometimes called body or gender dysphoria) that is experienced by female to male transgender people (also known as people who are FTM, AFAB - assigned female at birth, transmasculine people, transguys or transmen). It can also include genderqueer or non-binary people who are born female. Binders are only available online from overseas and are difficult to obtain in New Zealand.

The Wellington Binder Exchange aims to fill a service gap for transmasculine youth in Wellington.

“Binders are important part of the transition process. We look forward to working together with Evolve Wellington Youth Service and the Capital and Coast DHB to improve services for trans youth and assist in the development of care pathways,” said Charles Prout, coordinator of the exchange.

The binders will be sourced through donations and stored at Evolve Wellington Youth Service. Organisers are asking for people to pass on any used binders that are still in wearable condition. There will be a drop in session every second Wednesday where young people are able to obtain binders.

If you would like to donate or have any enquiries, please contact wellingtonbinderexchange@gmail.com.
