Petone Solstice
Petone Solstice
160 athletes took part in the annual Petone Solstice race on Sunday, 19 June
Junior (14 year olds) rowers through to masters (60+ years old) took part in the annual event, which saw 28 crew race the 8km course along the petone foreshore.
Rowers were represented from all the local clubs: Petone Rowing Club, Wellington Rowing Club, Star Boating Club, Porirua Rowing Club and Horowhenua Rowing Club.
The race has an unusual twist - a le mans start - which means rowers run across the beach before grabbing their boats and oars and setting off. Crews were staggered with doubles and singles starting first followed by fours / quads and finally eights.
Because of the le mans start and the various boat classes finish times are calculated by prognostics.
Results: Winners (Horowhenua Rowing Club Mens 4x-), Second (Star Boating Club Mens 8+), Third (Porirua Rowing Club Womens U17 2x).
