Decision in Heritage New Zealand’ hands
The future of the grandstand on the Golden Bay Recreation Park will soon be in the hands of Heritage New Zealand. The Council is making an application to the independent body in which the grandstand’s heritage value will be assessed.
The application and its possible consequences was the subject of a meeting between the key grandstand supporters and the Council earlier this week in Takaka.
Councillor Judene Edgar, Chair of the Council’s Community Development Committee, said the meeting was constructive and amicable. “We focused on the need to wait on the outcome of Heritage New Zealand.
“The meeting started with a shared understanding there is a need for the new Recreation Centre and moved forward to a shared understanding of each party’s perspective.”
It was acknowledged that despite construction of the new facility continuing while the application is being processed by Heritage New Zealand, the grandstand would remain in place. It was noted that it could be some months before Council receives a final decision from Heritage New Zealand.
