Coughlan statement re Mayoralty

Coughlan statement re Mayoralty

Mayoral Candidate Jo Coughlan responded to Celia Wade-Brown’s decision not to stand for the Wellington Mayoralty.

“I have led the City’s Economic Development Strategy and worked effectively with Celia as Wellington Mayor over the last 6 years. We have always worked in a collegial way, even when we haven’t agreed about the direction the city has needed to take, and I’ve always valued her input around the council table.

“Wellington will now have a new mayor, and this creates an opportunity for real change in our city. While it’s clear we have made some great progress, we need to do more. As Mayor I will focus on improving Wellington’s roading infrastructure and securing the $1 billion of Government funding available to double the Mt Victoria and Terrace Tunnels and create four lanes to the planes.

“I also think it’s critically important that Wellington’s next mayor is fully focused on the job ahead. I am running solely for mayor, and I am not running as a member of a political party or in a ward. My agenda is to make Wellington the best place to live and work and raise a family in New Zealand, not to further any Parliamentary ambitions.

“Wellingtonians can trust me to do a great job for our city. I have the experience of working with government, business and on Council that sees me well placed to become the next Mayor of Wellington. Earlier today I was pleased to announce the support of former Mayor Kerry Prendergast for my mayoral candidacy.

“I wish Celia all the best with her future endeavours, and look forward to working with her in the future should the opportunity arise.”
