Knack Market to be held this Saturday

Knack Market to be held this Saturday

Wellington’s favourite market for high-quality handcrafted goods is open to the public this weekend.

Berhampore Primary School’s Knack market features creative, original and authentic locally made goods.

It offers an opportunity for crafters to showcase their products and is a major fundraiser for the vibrant and popular school.

The upcoming Spring market features the work of Christine Mary Brimer who designs and handweaves cushions and baby blankets from naturally coloured New Zealand wool under the label Niche Textile Studio. Brimer learned to weave when studying textile design at Massey University where her tutors instilled in her the importance of ideation and iteration and consideration of materiality, sustainability and market, in design.

She creates her work from her home studio looking out across Lyall Bay.

“The structural weaves evoke the play of light and shadow which reveals the forms and textures of New Zealand’s truly amazing landscapes,” Brimer says. “Wool’s natural hues sit beautifully alongside flowers, foliage, art and contemporary interior materials including steel, timber and concrete.”

For Kylie Doran, having children has allowed her the lifestyle to reconnect with a love of sewing she first discovered as a school student. She works from home with her toddler, scheduling sewing and pattern cutting around daily routines like nap times.

Doran’s children are an inspiration for her work, and a beneficiary of her labour when they are decked out in her funky Scarlett&Grace kids clothing.

“I love fabric and I always buy that with no thought in mind of what I’ll make with it till I get it home and start placing patterns on it to see what would work best,” Doran says. “My kids also inspire my work as I love to see them smile when I give them a new item to wear.”

The Knack market attracts new and returning stallholders.

Gwenda Pearson of Doris Tatting first offered her wares at the Knack market in 2013. She makes tatted jewellery, a form of lace making using a shuttle that she first delved into as a teenager and picked it up again a decade ago.

“I mostly tat on the bus going to and from work. Anyone who catches a bus from Constable Street into town has probably seen me,” Pearson says. “Tatting is a very portable craft and I always have it on me.”

She has expanded her range and experimented with different patterns and threads and now offers pendants, brooches, earrings and necklaces.
