Second call for artists to blaze the Trail in 2017

Second call for artists to blaze the Trail in 2017

Are you a budding artist or designer wanting to show the people of Wellington your creative talent?

Emerging artists and designers now have a second chance to be part of the Upstream Art Trail in Central Park, one of Wellington’s oldest recreational areas. The deadline has been extended for talented artists to sign up. “We know how easily people can get busy and miss a deadline. We’ve already got some exciting proposals, but Central Park is a big space and we can support some more” said Max Kerr, Convenor of the Organising Committee.

The second Upstream Art Trail is happening over four days in March 2017. It will build on the successful event last year which had generated a “warm endorsement” from artists.

“They [the artists] spoke enthusiastically about the natural beauty of the setting and the intimacy and variety of the spaces that they could use to connect with their work,” Mr Kerr said.

“Many said that they would be keen to participate again if the opportunity arose and all would recommend the event to others.”

The theme this time is “Structure”, with artists and designers asked to provide works that can respond or interact with specific sites within Central Park. A curatorial panel will assess each proposal based on a number of factors including the response to the proposed site, resilience to bad weather and vandalism, and most importantly, the innovative contribution to the focus on “Structure”.

The Art Trail is focused on emerging talent, so ideally submitters would be recent graduates or in the early years of their creative practice with the event serving as an emerging talent showcase. “For many of these artists there are few opportunities for them to display their work to the wider public, so exposure is the big thing we can offer - that, plus the chance to include this event on their CVs,” Mr Kerr said.

More information about how to apply is in the artist brief at Upstream’s website: http://upstream.org.nz/for-artists/.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday, October 7 and successful applicants will be notified before Friday, October 21.
