As stated in a press release from Wellington City Council yesterday afternoon, one lane around the demolition site of 61 Molesworth has reopened to vehicles and pedestrians. Car, bus and foot traffic is moving along (albeit slowly) and some surrounding buildings have been allowed full access.
Council states that access to the adjacent properties “will likely be allowed in coming cordon reductions, the first due before the end of the year after the tower comes down.” One month after the earthquake and we can envision an end to this blip in daily routine for so many commuters. Although it has been a bit of an inconvenience, it has also been a sparkle of excitement – not a day passes that I haven’t seen someone stop to watch or capture the action on their smartphone.
