Greens glad to see Smith joining the race
The Green Party’s candidate for Nelson, Matt Lawrey, says he is delighted that his entry in this Saturday’s Nelson Trolley Derby has inspired Nelson’s National MP Nick Smith to sign up for the first time.
“It was actually quite flattering to learn from the organiser that Nick had decided to enter after he heard The Greens were racing. It suggests he sees us as a threat,” Lawrey said.
“The other thing I love about the fact that Nick is entering for the first time in all his years as an MP is that it means more money is being raised to keep the derby afloat,” Lawrey said.
Lawrey and Smith will be among 10 trolleys competing in the derby’s corporate class, which helps to pay for the iconic Nelson event.
Lawrey says after years of MC-ing the derby and watching his kids taking part he decided it was high time he got into the race.
“It’s a great Nelson event and I see no reason why us grown-ups should miss out on all the fun,” he said.
The Mike Pero Nelson Trolley Derby gets rolling this Saturday in Collingwood St from 9am.
