Metamorphosis Symposium

Metamorphosis Symposium

As Dunedin prepares for the influx of fashion loving creators and consumers for the iD Dunedin Fashion Week, Otago Polytechnic prepares for the educators who will guide the future of fashion design.

Margo Barton, Otago Polytechnic Professor of Fashion, has helped organise the inaugural “Metamorphosis Symposium” – a gathering of academics to discuss how fashion professionals move forward in this ever-changing world.

“Every year, lots of entrants, and their lecturers, from fashion schools around the world come to the iD International Emerging Designer Awards. This is a perfect opportunity for fashion educators to get together.”

The symposium will have presenters from around New Zealand, and papers from Australia and India. They’ll address many aspects of the fashion industry, including globalisation, technology, consumer desires and sustainability.

Otago Polytechnic’s Head of Design School, Caroline Terpstra, and senior lecturer, Tracy Kennedy, will present From Planet to People – how fashion education can contribute to a more ethical and sustainable fashion future at 10:30am.

“Fashion educators are in the perfect place to help the industry become more sustainable and reflective. Fashion educators will introduce ideas and challenge fashion students who are our future fashion professionals” says Ms Barton.
