Centreport to Remove Earthquake-Prone Buildings

A metal curtain will be erected alongside Waterloo Quay this month in preparation for the demolition of the former MSC (“Seaworks”) and Shed 29/G&A buildings.

The former MSC and Shed 29/G&A buildings had been assessed as earthquake-prone before the 2016 earthquake.

The demolition of these buildings will create space for ferry operations.

“CentrePort’s licensed contractor is currently safely containing and removing asbestos in the former MSC and Shed 29/G&A buildings, according to a process reviewed by WorkSafe,” says Nick Wareham, General Manager Property at CentrePort.

“When this process is complete, we will begin hard demolition.

“We have done our best to minimise disruption to the public. As the footpath beside the buildings will be closed during demolition, we will be asking pedestrians and cyclists to use the footpath on the other side of the road.”

The demolition contractor will use misting machines to minimise any dust, and a metal curtain between the buildings and the road to protect the road from debris.

The demolition is expected to take up to three months.

CentrePort is still in discussions with engineers and insurers about the future of other Port buildings.
