Wellingtonians’ generosity ensuring continuation of kai and community

Compassion Soup Kitchen’s annual Street Day Appeal a success

On Friday 25th May, Wellingtonians demonstrated their goodwill and generosity towards to the Compassion Soup Kitchen. Over 200 volunteers collected at 20 sites around the Wellington region, fundraising to support the capital’s most marginalised and vulnerable.

The Compassion Soup Kitchen has opened their doors to Wellingtonians for 117 years. As the Soup Kitchen’s biggest fundraiser, donations from the annual Street Appeal ensure the doors to this important service will remain open to those who need it.

The Street Appeal plays a vital role in raising both funds and awareness to assist the community in the challenges they are facing, such as housing deprivation, addiction, poor mental health, food insecurity, and social isolation.

“Without a sense of purpose and belonging, it is hard to call somewhere home” – says a Soup Kitchen guest. The Compassion Soup Kitchen provides a safe place where people are known, welcome and wanted.

The Soup Kitchen serves around 30 breakfasts and 60 dinners a day, from Monday to Saturday, as well as service support, access to technology, meaningful activities, and a sense of community. Two social workers walk with guests by supporting them to have their mental and physical health needs met: in arranging accommodation, access to financial entitlement, and finding employment opportunities. Everyone is welcome in the community and no one is turned away, regardless of their circumstance.
