South Island School Teams Prepare to Compete in Torpedo7 Junior Get2Go Challenge

The Torpedo7 Junior Get2Go Challenge kicks off in the South Island next week with 73 school teams competing to represent their regions at the national Grand Final in December.

A cross between the Amazing Race, Treasure Island and Survivor for year 9s and 10s, the event is a super fun multisport event designed to encourage more young people to get involved in outdoor pursuits. Close to 230 teams have registered to compete in the 12 regional events this year, each one involving four individual 60-minute races held in a single day.

“Teams find out the four activities on the day, so they need to be prepared to go mountain biking, rock climbing, orienteering, kayaking, negotiate a SUP or solve a complex set of problems,” says Darren Ashmore, Events Manager. “Each event is different, and designed to expose students to some of the cool adventure opportunities that can be done locally,” he says. “There’s a lot of great stuff happening out there and we are so very lucky in New Zealand to have such an incredible natural playground all around us for everyone to enjoy.”

The first eight regional competitions in the series were held in the North Island last month and the next four will be held in the South Island during September:

• 11 September Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough Nelson (15 teams)

• 14 September Central Otago/Southland Queenstown (10 teams)

• 17 September Otago/Southland Dunedin (24 teams - full)

Teams of eight represent their school in one of four categories - All Girls, All Boys, Mixed and Mixed Premier (4 girls/4boys) – in a series of 12 regional competitions culminating in a Grand Final.

Now in its 13th year, the Torpedo7 Junior Get2Go Challenge is organised by Hillary Outdoors and supported by sports clubs and organisations right across New Zealand. This is the second year the event has been sponsored by Torpedo7.

The national Torpedo7 Junior Get2Go Grand Final will be held at the Hillary Outdoors marine base on Great Barrier Island between the 10th and 14th of December 2018.
