Urban Forest Stand Off!
The chainsaws are still silent.
The trees that Auckland Community Facilities (a division of Auckland Council) wanted to fell under "Emergency Powers" are still standing!
The battle by residents, supported by protesters has been ongoing for over a week.
Both sides now agree there is little risk of the 3 dead trees immediately falling.
However, the total number of trees and methodology of removal is still in dispute.
Protesters want the dead trees close to property surgically removed by helicopter.
Auckland Council arborists want to cut & drop the trees despite the negative impact on the regenerating native bush & delicate ecosystems beneath.
The idea of the Council cutting a road into this Significant Ecological Area (SEA) is slowly fading under the pressure of common sense.
The lack of trust in Auckland Council arborists is obvious by the fact that the protesters are still occupying the area near the threatened trees.
Residents & the local community want Auckland Council to engage in a joint management plan to protect & encourage the existing regenerating native bush under the aging pines.
Treescape Ltd is not confident about using helicopters to remove the trees or happy to ask their employees to climb them. But protesters say an expert helicopter tree removal company is available to do the job.
Negotiations continue between Council officers and the Community.
