Iwi Farewells Director Of Te Reo, Tikanga & Mātauranga

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is pleased to announce the moving on of Dr. Jeremy Tātere MacLeod as the Director of Te Reo, Tikanga & Mātauranga, a role he has held for over 13 years.

Jeremy was appointed to the position of Director of Te Reo, Tikanga & Mātauranga in August 2010 and has been responsible for managing and further progressing the Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Te Reo Māori Strategy which includes the safeguarding and protection of Kahungunutanga through the implementation of the Strategic Plan for the Revitalisation of Te Reo Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu 2006-2027 and the development of cultural and educational activities that enhance the wellbeing of Ngāti Kahungunu whānau, hapū, iwi.

Under Jeremy’s leadership, the organisation has led the following successful projects:

  • The review of the Ngāti Kahungunu Māori Language Strategy from whence came Kahungunu, kia eke!
  • The implementation of Te Kura Reo o Ngāti Kahungunu that recently celebrated its 10th year.
  • The Te Reo ki Tua National Māori Language Revitalisation Symposium.
  • Ngā Tohu Reo o Ngāti Kahungunu where we have been able to celebrate our language champions from Ngāti Kahungunu.
  • The Whakamana i Te Pae o Huaki-pōuri whaikōrero and karanga wānanga.
  • The development of rangatahi excellence programmes including Te Tira Hou, Te Pae Tata and Te Pōkaitara. Rangatahi in these programmes have gone on to become leaders in Te Reo Māori throughout the country.

During the past 13 years the organisation has received a number of national supreme awards in acknowledgement for the it’s Māori language revitalisation efforts.

In 2020, Jeremy established Kauwaka Limited, a service provider that contributes to the language and cultural revitalisation endeavors within Ngāti Kahungunu. “Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated continues to endorse this exciting partnership in continuing to uplift the Te Reo Māori aspirations of our people” – Chrissie Hape, Chief Executive, Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated.

“We acknowledge all the mahi that Jeremy has done in the iwi and for our 39,000 registered iwi members and we look forward to continuing our relationship with enthusiasm and pride.”
