Wellington Region Emergency Management Weather Update: 6:25am Friday 2 May
“The Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, which includes local councils have had teams actively monitoring the weather situation overnight. There have been no significant changes to the warnings since MetService downgraded the Red Strong Wind Warning for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua to Orange at 9:00pm last night and that Orange Wind Warning ended at 3:00am this morning.
While conditions have eased slightly, parts of the region are still experiencing heavy rain, strong winds, and hazardous conditions. We urge the public to avoid travel unless necessary.
If travel is required, we advise people to plan ahead, drive to the conditions, expect delays, and watch for debris on the roads. A number of local road closures remain in place and council crews will be out today assessing the impacts and working to clear debris safely.
Wind, rain, and swell warnings remain in place for some areas. We encourage people to stay up to date with the latest forecasts at www.metservice.com.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as new information becomes available. In the meantime, we ask everyone to take care and prioritise safety, particularly during the morning commute.”
