SH1 Mangamuka Gorge To Re-open At Midday
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is advising road users that State Highway 1 through the Mangamuka Gorge will re-open by midday today (12 July), following the clearance of further debris which came down on the road overnight.
NZTA contractors worked throughout the night to clear slip material and restore access. This morning, engineers completed a comprehensive inspection of the area, including known slip sites and other vulnerable assets. The inspection has confirmed the route is safe for travel.
The road was closed following a slip on the southern side of the gorge yesterday afternoon (Friday 11 July).
NZTA appreciates the public’s patience and understanding during this closure and thanks the crews who worked in challenging conditions to get the road safely reopened as soon as possible.
