The Act Party will run two candidates in North Canterbury in the October local government elections.
Tom Spooner has been confirmed as the Act Local candidate in the Hurunui District Council’s south ward, while Nathan Atkins will stand under the Act banner in the Waimakariri District Council’s Kaiapoi-Woodend ward.
It is thought to be the first time a registered political party has openly stood candidates in North Canterbury council elections.
Mr Spooner is a qualified industrial mechanic and runs North Canterbury business Spooner Brothers Ltd.
‘‘Council needs to focus solely on the basics,’’ he said.
‘‘We should deliver the essentials well, keep costs down, and respect the people who pay the rates.’’
Four candidates had confirmed nominations for the south ward, as of Friday morning, July 25, including sitting councillor Robbie Bruerton.
Other confirmed candidates were Michael Ennis, Barrie Nunn and Lulu Webb.
There are four seats around the council table up for grabs in the south ward.
Mr Atkins said he has a background in competitive sport, a degree in exercise science, and over a decade managing fitness businesses across Asia.
‘‘I’m running to bring practical, disciplined leadership to local government, the kind that focuses on outcomes, not ideology,’’ he said.
‘‘Through my experience as a competitive athlete, business owner, and coach, I’ve learned how to lead teams, make tough decisions, and stay focused on long-term goals.’’
There are four positions available in the Kaiapoi-Woodend ward, with two sitting councillors Brent Cairns and Philip Redmond understood to be standing for re-election.
Tim Bartle, Matt James and Shona Powell have also announced they will stand in the ward.
