Severe Weather and Coastal Hazards Expected – West Coast Residents and Travellers Urged to Prepare
West Coast Emergency Management is urging residents and those travelling through the region, including into Canterbury, to prepare for a period of hazardous weather expected to impact the West Coast and wider South Island from late Saturday night through Sunday, 21 September.
An active weather system, including heavy rain, severe winds, and significant coastal swells, is forecast to affect large parts of the South Island. These conditions may cause travel disruptions, property damage, coastal inundation, and power outages.
MetService has issued Orange Warnings for heavy rain and wind in Westland and Grey Districts, with Red Wind Warnings for inland Canterbury and a Wave Warning for the West Coast coastline from Jackson Bay to Karamea.
Key Hazards:
• Westland: Heavy rain (120–180mm) and strong wind gusts up to 120km/h Risk of flooding, slips, and power outages
• Grey District: Strong winds and potential severe gusts in exposed areas. Secure loose items and be prepared for travel delays
• Buller District: Expect windy conditions and rainfall to increase through Sunday. Drive with caution on exposed and elevated roads
• Canterbury, Red wind warning: Inland areas face destructive northwest gales (up to 150km/h) Major risk to travellers
• Coastline (Jackson Bay to Karamea): Large swells up to 5.5 metres around high tide (10:36am Greymouth) Stay away from coastal areas
Safety Advice:
• Secure loose items, prepare for power outages, and avoid flood-prone areas
• Postpone travel, if possible, especially over alpine routes to Canterbury
• Avoid beaches and boating during peak swell conditions
For Travellers and Campers:
If you're travelling overnight or early Sunday morning:
• Avoid parking or camping near river mouths, beaches, or under trees
• Ensure you are in a secure, weather-safe location overnight
• Have a torch, power bank, and emergency supplies available
• Let someone know your travel plans and check in when safe
Stay Informed, Stay Safe
West Coast Emergency Management encourages all residents and visitors to stay up to date with warnings, and take proactive steps to stay safe during this event. These weather systems can change rapidly, and being prepared makes a significant difference.
