Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has paid tribute to retiring councillors Sharon Stewart, Chris Darby and Angela Dalton. The trio gave valedictory speeches at the final Governing Body (GB) meeting of the term on Thursday.

“I want to acknowledge the many years of service these councillors have given to their local communities and to the people of Auckland. Everybody has their own reason for going into politics. But we’re all motivated by a desire to change things for the better,” Mayor Brown said.

“The role of councillor can be both demanding and thankless. This term alone the Governing Body has spent more than 375 hours in meetings and workshops, with mountains of paper to wade through. Yet it can be a richly rewarding experience. I respect anyone who is willing to put their hand up and serve.”

Sharon Stewart

Councillor Sharon Stewart (Howick) is retiring after 30 years in local body politics including 12 years on the former Manukau City Council. Stewart has served as chair of the Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee since 2013.

“I particularly want to acknowledge the role Sharon has played in strengthening Auckland’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities since the extreme weather events of early 2023, We will always remember her advocacy for better management of stormwater catchments and streams,” Mayor Brown said.

Chris Darby

Councillor Chris Darby (North Shore) has spent 15 years with Auckland Council – three as Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair, twelve as councillor. Prior to amalgamation, Darby served on the former North Shore City Council for six years.

Mayor Brown applauded Councillor Darby for serving in varying roles over the years.

“Chris has been a highly effective councillor who brings a regional focus to decision-making. I commend Chris for his diligence and sharp mind. As a director on the AT board, Chris has done a superb job in holding the organisation to account.”

Angela Dalton

Councillor Angela Dalton (Manurewa-Papakura) began her political career on the Manurewa Community Board in 2007. Dalton has served as an Auckland councillor since 2019. She is deputy chair of the Policy and Planning Committee, and chair of the Community Committee.

“Angela has made an outstanding contribution to the quality of decision-making around the council table by championing inclusive leadership and stronger relationships with Māori. She has been a strong advocate for South Auckland.

“As deputy chair of the Policy and Planning Committee, she played a key role in advocating for stronger planning rules to manage flood risk, as well as serving as lead councillor for Eke Panuku’s urban redevelopment goals,” Mayor Brown said.
