Te Tai O Poutini Plan Notified

Today’s public notification of Te Tai o Poutini Plan, the one district plan, marks a milestone for the West Coast.

For the first time the region has a single, combined district plan. providing consistency across districts while reflecting the unique character of Coast communities.

TTPP Committee Chair Rex Williams says major benefits of the Plan include:

  • Economic development: new mineral extraction zones (including on public conservation land where appropriate), maintaining high value farming land, enabling renewable energy development and supporting research, science, technology and advanced manufacturing.
  • Regulatory efficiency: one plan, one rulebook for the Coast – reducing compliance costs and creating certainty for investors and communities.
  • Innovation and small business growth: allowing more flexible rules for home-based and start-up businesses and alternative visitor accommodation options.
  • Tourism and the visitor economy: Special Purpose Visitor Zones in Punakaiki, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier to support high-amenity, resilient development.
  • Hazard resilience: Hazard overlays to improve safety and maintain insurability.

The Committee wanted to sincerely thank the hundreds of people - as individuals or through groups - who had made submissions, says Rex Williams.

“We want to acknowledge everyone who took the time to make a submission. Your local knowledge, ideas, and feedback have been invaluable in shaping a stronger, more balanced plan.”

The new rules come into effect immediately upon public notification, for all matters not subject to appeal.

Any person who submitted on the proposed TTPP may now lodge an appeal to the Environment Court. Appeals must relate only to matters raised in original submissions. They must be lodged within 30 working days of the public notice of decisions.

The appeals process provides a final opportunity for submitters to raise outstanding concerns with the Environment Court providing oversight and resolution.
