After almost two decades in the planning, Greytown’s wheels park is set to open on Monday. This vibrant new space - officially named Te Papa Ora o Mōroa - would be a hub for skaters, scooters, BMX riders, and families alike, with the community invited to dust off their helmets and enjoy the ride.
The park, located at 4–6 Pierce St, was designed and engineered by Convic, a design and engineering company with more than 800 park designs completed around the world. The completion of this project would be two months ahead of schedule for South Wairarapa District Council which has funded this stage of the work via $1 million in developer contributions as part of its Long-Term Plan.
Developer contributions could only be used for the development of reserves and open spaces. The council’s community operations acting manager Melissa Stockley said it had been an honour to have had some part in bringing the project to fruition after it being in the works for “such a long time”.
“I'm buzzing that the rangatahi and skating community of the South Wairarapa will have a destination park on their doorstep,” she said. “Construction kicked off in late July and is to open early, thanks to the hard mahi and strong talent at Convic; the swift responsiveness, hard work and high-quality concrete from Gray Brothers (contractors) the council and community support.”
Future plans for Papa Ora included a basketball court, playground, and pump track. Fundraising for these additions were planned to be a community initiative and the concept plans have already been done.
The Greytown Wheels Park group which has been pushing the project along for more than a decade, was looking for a team of enthusiastic locals to come on board and keep the momentum going with the next stages of the project.
“Don’t be afraid of putting your name forward. You don’t have to have specific skills - enthusiasm is the key,” the group said on Facebook. “If you have experience with setting up or being on not-for-profit entities, fundraising, making submissions and applications, that would be great but not essential.”
An official opening party is planned for Saturday, November 15, with the council set to confirm further details.
