Harbourmaster Issues Wreck Declaration For Golden Lea

Marlborough Harbourmaster Captain Jake Oliver issued a declaration of wreck on the vessel Golden Lea on Friday.
During the strong winds last Thursday, the vessel dragged anchor, drifted and then ran aground in the Mahakipawa Arm, Pelorus Sound, Captain Oliver said.
“We are making plans for the vessel’s removal should the owner not comply with the wreck declaration, which expires this Monday 1 November,” Captain Oliver said.
He said the vessel has previously been subject to two abatement notices for staying in the same location for over 60 consecutive days, a breach of the Marlborough Environment Plan. Another abatement notice was issued this morning by the Council’s Consent and Compliance Team in relation to the vessel’s unconsented occupation of the coastal marine zone.
“Unless the owner relocates the vessel by this Monday, we will remove it. We would much prefer to take it to a port location for salvage; however if the vessel is found to be seriously damaged by its grounding we might have to break it up in its current location.”
“We are in discussion with experienced contractors to assist with both these scenarios.”
The Harbourmaster said the potential for marine pollution from the vessel was minimal.
“There is a small amount of diesel on board, which would have only a minor environmental impact. I know some locals have concerns about pollution, but the risk is low.”
