Evacuation Underway For Oakura Properties Due To Landslide Risk
Evacuations are underway for 22 homes in Oakura in Northland due to the increased risk of potential landslides as severe weather moves into the district.
Whangārei District Council Civil Defence staff and New Zealand Police are carrying out the evacuations at affected properties as a precautionary safety measure. This follows a worsening weather forecast, with a band of heavy rain and strong winds expected from midafternoon.
Whangarei District Civil Defence Controller Victoria Harwood said the decision was made to prioritise public safety.
“Based on the latest information, there is a risk of land instability in this area. With severe weather forecast this afternoon, it is not safe to assess the land behind properties at this time. Asking people to evacuate now is the safest option while this weather event passes,” Harwood said.
Residents are being provided with assistance for those who need support with transport, accommodation, medications, pets, or essential items.
“We understand this is disruptive and stressful for people, but weather conditions may change quickly. We want residents to be somewhere safe before that happens,” Harwood said.
Once the severe weather has passed and it is safe, specialist geotechnical teams will assess the area, and residents will be advised when it is safe to return.
Council’s Emergency Operations Centre is activated and is working closely with emergency services as the situation develops.
