The world stands at one of the most dangerous crossroads in modern history. On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched a massive, unprovoked military assault against Iran—a nation that posed no military threat. Iran's Supreme Leader and dozens of senior officials were killed. A girls' elementary school was bombed, with scores of children among the dead. Thousands of people have since been murdered by US and Israeli bombs.
The Trump administration is waging this criminal war despite mass opposition from the American working class and the vast majority of the world’s population. Hundreds of millions of people around the world are being plunged into poverty and hunger due to the blocking of supply routes.
Meanwhile Israel wages a brutal war of extermination in Lebanon and is continuing its ethnic cleansing of Palestine. These are fronts in a developing Third World War, in which US imperialism is seeking to seize markets and resources and redivide the globe at the expense of Russia and China.
The New Zealand capitalist class is not a bystander: it wants a seat at the table for the violent redivision of the world. The government has lined up squarely behind the criminal US-Israeli onslaught. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters echoed Washington's war propaganda almost word for word, saying that the attack was “to prevent Iran from continuing to threaten international peace and security.”
The Labour Party and the Greens have called the war illegal, but their words are a smokescreen. The last Labour-led government, which included the Greens, strengthened NZ’s alliance with US imperialism—including by sending NZ troops to Britain to train Ukrainian conscripts for the war with Russia. At the end of 2023, Labour endorsed Israel’s murderous assault on the Gaza Strip.
Labour and the union bureaucracy support the current government’s move to double military spending in order to integrate NZ into US and Australian war plans against China. This is being paid for with historic cuts to healthcare, education and other vital services.
At the May 19 meeting, speakers from the SEG and the IYSSE will discuss the origins and driving forces of the US-Israeli war, and the urgent need for the working class to unite internationally, on the basis of a socialist program, to stop the war and the descent into fascist barbarism by ending the capitalist system which is their root cause.
We urge all our readers to share this meeting notice widely, and to register and make plans to attend our meeting to participate in this vital discussion.
