Land Search And Rescue New Zealand National Awards Recognise Outstanding Volunteers
Land Search and Rescue New Zealand has recognised the extraordinary dedication of volunteers across Aotearoa at two National Awards ceremonies held over the past fortnight.
The awards celebrate individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond in service of the lost, missing, and injured, highlighting the critical role volunteers play in supporting communities across the country.

Supreme Award for an Outstanding Operation
Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue
The Supreme Award, Land Search and Rescue New Zealand’s highest operational honour, was presented to the Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue team for their response to a complex rescue on Mt Taranaki during severe winter conditions.
Operating in blizzard weather and hazardous alpine terrain, the team successfully located and escorted surviving climbers to safety before returning the following day in worsening conditions to recover a deceased climber with dignity and care. Their professionalism, resilience, and teamwork exemplified the highest standards of search and rescue.
Volunteer of the Year
Al Twohill – Search and Rescue Nelson
Alan “Al” Twohill was named Volunteer of the Year for his exceptional leadership and contribution to Search and Rescue Nelson.

Alongside operational involvement, Al has strengthened governance and helped modernise technology systems across the region, including work to implement improved callout systems and supporting national ICT initiatives.

Peter Panton was recognised for nearly five decades of behind-the-scenes service to Ruapehu Search and Rescue.

Through long-standing roles including Secretary, Treasurer, and Equipment Officer, Peter has helped ensure the group operates effectively, supporting volunteers and strengthening the organisation over many years.
