Market Street Revamp Project To Refresh Blenheim’s Town Centre
Stage One of the Market Street Revamp Project starts this winter.
CBD Portfolio Holder Councillor Benjamin Stace said Market Street was a key link of Blenheim’s town centre and a well-used, valued retail street.
“However, the streetscape has become dated and no longer reflects the quality and vibrancy of the wider Marlborough region with the last major upgrade in 1998.

“Stage One of the project will deliver a practical refresh that modernises key elements of the streetscape while largely retaining the existing layout.
"This approach will reduce the project costs in a practical way, while minimising disruption to businesses and the public,” Clr Stace said.
Work is programmed to start in June from Main Street to Wynen Street. Construction will be undertaken in stages with works to be completed prior to Christmas.
“Council’s long-term aim is to refresh the Blenheim town centre, strengthening its appeal as a vibrant, attractive CBD. This is an initial step in paving the way for Blenheim’s town centre revitalisation,” he said.
The design for Market Street has been prepared by RMM (Rough Milne Mitchell) Landscape Architects and draws inspiration from the local natural and historic landscape.
Waiharakeke – Blenheim – has been shaped by water, with the Wairau, Ōpaoa and Ōmaka/Taylor Rivers all close by.
This has influenced the ‘riverbank’ design concept which features undulating paving patterns and social ‘eddie’ zones that encourage people to stop, meet and gather.
Existing paving will be replaced with safer, more durable materials, street lighting improved for better visibility and consistency, and landscaping and planting refreshed.
Where possible, existing street furniture will be refurbished and reused, provided it is suitable for the refreshed environment.
Several liquid amber trees will be removed to allow for the planting of large new feature trees more suited to a street environment, alongside upright and smaller layering plants.
There is a strong focus on New Zealand native planting, adding dimension and greenery to the streetscape.

The pavers at Market Place will also be rejuvenated and some underground service upgrades, including stormwater improvements, will be carried out at the same time.
Shop owners, operators, and the public will have access to Market Street at all times.
However, there will be periods of noise, temporary access restrictions and traffic changes at certain stages of the project.
“Maintaining access to businesses throughout construction is a priority,” Clr Stace said.
Stage One of the town centre revamp is funded through the Targeted CBD Commercial Rate with no impact on general rates.
