Consultants Bring Home the Bacon
Pork producers are finding it difficult to compete against Canadian imports - so they have spent $55,000 on consultants applying for tariff protection.
The Pork Industry Board claims Canadian pork is subsidised. But rather than ask the Government to impose WTO-sanctioned anti-subsidy measures, it last year asked for "emergency protection" in the form of tariffs.
The last government put that request on hold, but the matter is still being considered.
In the meantime, chief executive Brian Milne says the board's decision to seek an import tariff has so far cost $55,000 in consultancy fees alone.
