‘Insider’ group could damage NZ business reputation

The Government will be alert to the damage to New Zealand’s reputation that could result from today’ allegations of ‘insider’ dealings, says Business NZ.

Chief Executive Simon Carlaw says the story on the front page of today’s Herald could seriously damage New Zealand’s hard-won reputation for transparency and lack of corruption.

He said the facts of the case needed to be elucidated so the story could be put to rest quickly.

“Not only does New Zealand’s international reputation for straight dealing risk tarnish, but the issue at the heart of the Herald’s story – the development needs of New Zealand’s neglected roading and other infrastructure - also risks further setback as a result of negative investor perceptions,” Mr Carlaw said.

“The New Zealand business community does not need any slur hanging over it. The issue must be immediately clarified to prevent any loss of confidence by existing or potential investors in the New Zealand economy.”
